Autumn Artichokes (unframed)

This cheerful plein air piece was created locally.

Process: I initially drew the artichokes and made a thumbnail sketch to plan out the painting (see other image). After gaining permission to paint the garden I came back on a very cold but bright November day, managing to do a rather sketchy impression which was later tweaked in the studio.

Artistic decision: I made the greenhouse slightly smaller in order to emphasize the sense of distance and make the artichokes more triffid-like!
